DW Architecture: The Enterprise Data Repository

In the DW Architecture block diagram I presented the Enterprise Data Repository (EDR) as been part of the data sources and not of the Data Warehouse Architecture.

The EDR is use to integrate data from different business areas in a central place and to coordinate the common function of the enterprise; it is part of the global Enterprise Data Architecture. Some of the commons ways to implement the EDR are: as a database with references to other data sources (recommended), as an integrated ERP system or as replication of data sources data.

One example of the EDR is a Clinical Data Repository (CDR) where we integrate information from different sources systems after converting it to a standardized format (HL7).

Some of the main difference between the EDR and the EDW are:

Enterprise Data Repository Enterprise Data Warehouse
Only contain data relevant to the actual situation of the enterprise. Contain all historic data of the enterprise.
Is feed from the OLTP systems used for the enterprise in it day to day operations. It feed from all data sources of the enterprise, including unstructured data and big data sources.
Do not contain pre-calculated data. Contains a lot of pre calculated data.
Lack of bitemporal data. Contains bitemporal data.
Do not keep track of changes. Keep track of changes (changing dimensions).

This list is not complete and is only presented to clarify the differences between the EDR and the EDW.

The EDR is an optional component of the Enterprise Data Architecture; it implementation is not the responsibility of the DW team. But, it existence can facilitate the development of the EDW, because a lot of the integration work has already been done. If an EDR exist, it is a good candidate for be one of the main data sources to feed the EDW.
